... That's how Frank Glenfield remembered Prime Minister Stephen Harper ... Glenfield was his boss. The two formed a lasting bond.
... This past weekend, Harper fulfilled a promise and delivered a eulogy at Glenfield's funeral, telling many stories of Glenfield ...
Harper's appearance at the funeral reminded me of an interview I had done in 2008 with Frank and his actress wife, Mary ... At that time, they related the story of their relationship with Harper and his formative time in Edmonton....

Stephen Harper "worshipped Pierre Elliot Trudeau"
From the Edmonton Journal - David Staples' article with some interesting anecdotes about the young Stephen Harper:

A lot of us got caught up in Trudeaumania. I became disillusioned when he brought in closure for something in Parliament and I ripped up my Liberal Party Youth Member card. I also read Lubor Zink in the Toronto Sun about how Trudeau worshipped Castro and other dictators.
it's a no brainer that stephen harper when he was young was a truede fan. if anyone wants to know you can read the book stephen harper and the futrue of canada. not like it's a secret. also shows how he got turned off from the liebreals to on there see harper chaned his points of view to just like newt Gingrich in the states and yet people keep bringing up his past like that is the way he is now
Xactly. Who among us (sufficiently long-in-the-tooth, that is) didn't succumb to Trudeaumania in their youth? I voted for him in '68 and remained more or less left/neo-lib minded until growing up and gaining some common sense.
As someone (Churchill maybe) said: "If you're not a socialist before 30 you have no heart. If you remain a socialist after 30 you have no head." It's astounding just how many dolts there are out there.
Interesting... Being too young to vote for or against Turdo, I"ve always been somewhat fascinated with the whole Turdomania phenomena. It seems to me that it was a media nurtured "mania", without Canadians really knowing Turdos past, or his warped desires for the future of the country. Kind of like whats going on in the U.S. with Obummer. I've often said to myself... how could Canadians have had this bizarre love affair with such a perverse, destructive, seriously flawed girly man like Trudeau? Turdo had a devious "hidden agenda", to destroy Canada, which IMO, Canadians were unaware of. It doesn't surprise me in the least that someone like PM Harper could be caught up in all the myths and sloganeering of the Turdo propaganda machine. I'm just relieved that Mr. Harper and other Canadians have deprogrammed themselves from the selling of the cult of Trudeau, and have become enlightened to the destructive nature of such a deranged person as Trudeau was.
I was one of those caught up in "Trudeaumania",so many of us won't admit to it now, but he took Canada in a landslide.
Canada was still run by the WW2 generation, and the choice in the '68 election was an old grey Conservative,Bob Stanfield,or the dashing, cool, groovy, "now" PET.
Canadians had NEVER seen a campaign like it,it pitted the old guard against the NEW,NOW generation.
That Trudeau was of the same generation as Stanfield was buried by the masters of PR behind the campaign, and we swallowed the whole BS hook, line and etc. They even went to so far as to claim Trudeau was two years younger than he actually was.
Don't forget,we were used to Diefenbaker versus Pearson, and were still a rural/small town Country. Trudeau held parades and town hall meetings complete with busty cheerleaders in tight orange T-shirts.
Our hick jaws dropped when Pierre came to town and put on his show.
We were dazzled and hornswoggled. We had NO idea who he was,and the media sure as hell weren't about to tell us about the German helmet days,or the Russia trips or any of that nasty "negative" stuff.
Trudeau was "sexy" and the media jumped on the bandwagon and dragged us along with them. Objectivity died on the roadside and we HAD to vote for the NOW guy, instead of the stodgy old "yeterday's man".
We were suckered like the yokels we were.
Not very many of us will admit it now. It doesn't bother me a bit.
BUT,many of us LEARNED our lesson from that time, and absolutely REFUSE to jump on the bandwagon of the latest Messiah, no matter which Party he represents.
Trudeau taught us a good lesson, though an expensive one,and sure turned ME into the skeptic I have been for 30 years.
With all the multimedia exposure of every political candidate extant today,it's still disappointing how many people from all sides of the political spectrum still crave a messiah's bandwagon to jump on.
The rest of us voted for the dull, but steady,Stephen Harper. Too bad the Americans don't have a guy like Harper running for their top job.
dmorris: What a fabulous comment. My take would very much mirror yours. Mr. Martial Law-I´m a Tough Guy, also got my vote, but only once.
And also agree that the US is in desperate need of their own version of Stephen Harper.

I really appreciate the honesty, and common sense of dmorris and yourself JR... Educational, to say the least. It seems a lot of Canadians were really, for lack of a better word, duped, by the media labeled "Trudeaumania"... yet very difficult to get answers as to why. It's clear Turdo was not as advertised. The media in this country really have a lot to answer for. It's seems that a large part of the media industry simply turned a blind eye to Trudeaus radical leanings, and sold him to an unsuspecting public. Today it's clear just how unfit Trudeau was for any office of Government, never mind the PMO, but it does seem as though he was swept to power in a hale of deceit and misinformation, along with the publics desire for something "fresh". I hate to admit it, but the first federal election that I was of age to vote in, I voted for John Turner... Ouch! It still hurts to admit it... LOL... fortunately, he lost! Thankfully, along came Preston Manning and the Reform party with the amazing Deb Grey and eventually a young Stephen Harper, and hopefully the long over do repairing of the damage inflicted upon Canada by the midget dictator from Quebec.
I also voted Turner Sean m..But my most disappointing political moment was when Clark could not count and gave the Government back to Turdeau.I did not vote for the next 3 elections. And yes the MSM has a lot of explaining to do about backing such crap politicians as Turdeau and Chretien and recently Dion & Martin & Ignatief..Then the adoration of Jack Leyton.I would love to see these rags put out of business. But I digress,PM Harper is the best thing that has happened to Canada in the past 50 years and perhaps since Confederation.
Great comments all! Thanks and Happy New Year!
Yes, we were all duped it seems, thanks to a slick socialist 'Turdo', a worse than useless press and weak "conservatives". With the Harper conservatives in power and a weak opposition we're left with a mostly usless press to contend with which, hopefully, will be countered somewhat by a strong Sun News Network.
Ten things you don’t know about Steve Harper, the leader of Canada’s “Corporate Party”
1. Harper’s an Evangelist (i.e. a Holy Roller, but he doesn’t believe in it, it’s just for show, it’s actually just a front for “corporate interests”)
1. Harper’s church rejected divorcee Laureen, so after living common-law together, they married in a civil ceremony on December 11, 1993. So much for his religious shtick.
2. He's getting divorced (check out his website, all pics of Harper and Laureen together have been removed; note I don’t care they broke up, I care how he lies about it for years and uses fake happy family to campaign for him
2. His “personal assistant” Ray♥Novak used to live in Harper’s backyard above the garage… FOR YEARS… what wife would put up with THAT?
3. Member of the fundamentalist Christian Alliance Church (they don't like gay people)
4. Member of the Northern Foundation (I think they don't like black people)
5. Member of the Calgary School of Political Science (they don’t like science)
6. Leader of the Reforma/Alliance Party (they don't like women)
7. Former Head of the National Citizens Coalition (they want to kill our national health care)
8. Supporter of The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (AstroTurfers who want to kill Canada’s social safety net while running a pyramid scheme cheating taxpayers out of revenue from wealthy corporate donors)
8. He’s not a real Red Tory Conservative; he’s a Reforma Alliance CRAP Party thing
9. His grandfather (Harper’s family is from Moncton, New Brunswick) either offed himself after becoming mentally ill or ran off with a woman, the truth is never talked about for some reason
10. The asthmatic Harper wears a $3,000 weave (he's obsessed with his own image and has a special salt & pepper one for elections, brown other times)
11. Steve hates to travel and didn’t get a passport until he could travel at the public’s expense
12. Steve hates being a politician, is uncomfortable in groups, really dislikes glad-handing
10. Steve stole three Canadian elections in a row. True story; Google it.
13. Steve Harper was president of his high school's Young Liberals Club at Richview in Toronto; he also appeared on Reach for the Top t.v. program. Harper is not dumb, he just works for the interests of rich corporations / big business instead of for you
14. Spends every second of every waking moment plotting his scorched earth policy against Canada’s Natural Governing Party, The Liberals
Shouldn’t Steve Harper be working on other things? Like help for struggling families.
