The Liberal jihad against western oil - hypocrisy, double standards and lies

Ezra Levant:
We've seen this anti-oil, anti-western story before under Pierre Trudeau, and it doesn't end well for anyone.  If Quebec Liberals like Justin Trudeau and Denis Coderre block Energy East, not only will it mean economic devastation, but it will be a great cause of national disunity -- possibly even rekindling western separatism.

Related - Peter Foster: Anti-oil mayors are kings in Naomi Klein World:
... Coderre’s stance represents more than a casual alliance between Not in My Backyard, NIMBY, and Not on Planet Earth, NOPE. It represents part of a much larger UN-based Green Agenda to delegitimize national governments from above and below....
... if everybody gets to have a say on everything, nothing ever gets done. Thus the Act Local crowd really only wants everybody to have a say on things they want to stop.

More from Ezra on the Liberals' hypocritical war on western oil (and on no one else's):

Personally, I'm all for rekindling western separatism.

More evidence that Alberta is screwed (and Canada with it)

Alberta NDP appoints "crackpot" global warming "cult member" Dave Mowat to lead royalty review:

Ezra references this Globe and Mail article when Mowat was CEO of Vancity Credit Union which has a reputation for eco-nuttery on a variety of fronts.

How long will it take for Albertans to begin howling about (or at least acknowledging) their gross error in judgement?

Naomi Klein, the narcissistic one percenter who thinks she's Gaia

Naomi Klein has a new book out.  James Delingpole outlines what you need to know about it (and her).  A sampling of headings:

It's all about Naomi. ...
Naomi may possibly be under the illusion that she is Gaia ...

Naomi Klein is a one percenter - and therefore happily cushioned from all the economy-destroying measures she proposes ...

The interview she gave to (a clearly infatuated, slavering) Vogue is both depressing and unintentionally hilarious ...

Globe and Mail columnist craps all over GOC ad defending Canadian oil industry

Globe and Mail columnist Eric Reguly writes:
The ad in The New Yorker is pretty, if not quite arresting. The full-page photo on the inside back cover – prime real estate in the United States’ leading upmarket magazine... It is designed to convince influential Americans that the Keystone XL pipeline is environmentally safe, even desirable [the Horror!].
... What is clever about the ad is ... the headline and the succinct lines of copy beneath it. They are slick pieces of propaganda – misleading without being outright lies. Of course, advertising is all about propaganda. But this ad is unconscionable because you, the Canadian taxpayer, paid for it.
... The second point is that there is nothing “environmentally responsible” about building new pipelines that would allow a huge expansion of the Alberta oil sands. More pipelines, more oil, more greenhouse gases.
With Canadians like Reguly, who needs enemies?  In fact, such ridiculous whinging over a pro-Canadian-oil-industry ad puts Reguly in league with the eco-extremist enemies of Canadian oil-sands and pipelines.

Also, compared with the outright fabrications, funded in the many millions, by the scare-mongering enemies of Canadian oil sands and pipelines (eg. billionaire Obama-booster Tom Steyer) the $207,000 Canadian government ad is the epitome of forthrightness, honesty and frugality.

And, observations by Reguly such as these:
"... Canada’s Kyoto accord commitment. Canada bailed out of the accord in 2011, the only signatory country to do so.

... While the 17-per-cent target is intact, the chances of it being achieved are close to zero; even Environment Canada admits so.  ... because oil sands production is soaring. ..."
... are positives, not the negatives he implies.  Good for the government of Canada!

Northern Gateway - glass half full / glass half empty

Northern Gateway Pipeline approved with conditions

Financial Post:
In a decision that spans two volumes and nearly 500 pages, the three-member panel of environmental and energy regulators led by Sheila Leggett said the $6.5-billion project’s economic benefits outweigh the environmental burdens.

... approval includes 209 environmental, financial and technical conditions. Enbridge must set aside $950-million in liability coverage to cover costs of a potential spill, including at least $100-million available within 10 days in the event of a large rupture and $250-million of “no-fault” insurance, the panel said.

... Five conditions set by the B.C. government are still unresolved, and the pipeline remains deeply unpopular with some aboriginal groups and environmentalists.

... Reaction from opponents was swift. Greenpeace vowed on Thursday to “do what it takes, from court cases to civil disobedience, to ensure this pipeline never gets built.”
Vivian Krause shows that opposition to the NGP was largely the work of American ENGO, ForestEthics:
... a large percentage of the fuss over the Northern Gateway pipeline has been generated by a single, American organization: ForestEthics, based in San Francisco.... In its 2012 tax return ... ForestEthics claims credit for having generated fully 87 percent of the letters of comment sent to the National Energy Board regarding the Joint Review Panel for the Northern Gateway.

ForestEthics’s own words in its tax return: ... "... In the last six months of 2012, we amassed more than 25,000 new supporters for this campaign ... In August, we submitted to the National Energy Board 4,119 (out of 4,722 in total submitted) unique Letters of Comment on the Enbridge tankers/pipeline project, written by our supporters.”
... Since 2008, ForestEthics has been the workhorse of the Tar Sands campaign, co-funded by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Tides Foundation.

There are many hurdles still to jump, not least those set up by paid agitators and radical eco-fascists organized and funded by foreigners. Also, the BC NDP is still calling for rejection and then there's Christy Clark's "fair share" shakedown to consider.  Et cetera ...

Former Harper appointee calls Canada a "rogue state"

Eco-extremist and activist SFU professor Mark Jaccard rebukes Canada at Washington DC event:
... Mark Jaccard was one of the first people nominated by the Conservatives to the environmental file, when he was named in 2006 to the federal government's now-defunct National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy.

The environmental economist delivered a lengthy rebuke of Canada's climate-change performance at the event near the White House, as the Obama administration continued to grapple with whether to approve the Alberta-U.S. pipeline.
"On climate, Canada is a rogue state," Jaccard said ...
Jaccard is a rogue environmentalist with a long history of climate-nuttery. And there are few climate- related issues in BC that he isn't involved in.  It's hard to imagine that the federal bureaucrats who recommended his appointment in 2006 didn't have some inkling of who they'd be getting.

More boreal bullcrap (on the front page, above the fold)

Vancouver Sun, this morning - Huge swaths of Canada's boreal forest under threat
At least half of Canada's vast boreal forest should be strictly protected from any kind of development and the rest should be carefully managed to preserve or restore its ecological integrity ...

... The International Boreal Conservation Science Panel ... is sounding the alarm about Canada's 5.8-million square kilometre expanse of northern woods and wetlands ...

... Report co-author Jeff Wells, science adviser to the U.S.-based Pew Charitable Trusts, said in a statement that because of the "mounting pressures on boreal regions of Canada," ...
This is more anti-development propaganda brought to you by the same eco-radical ENGO bullies, thugs and shakedown artists who intimidated forest companies into signing the Canadian Boreal Forest "Agreement". [Recall that one company, Resolute Forest Products, located it's spine and sued for defamation.]

Neither forests nor forest wildlife are under any credibly realistic "threat".  Those most threatened (by eco-blackmailers) are people who make their living in the forests.  Eco-radicals brook no love for people.

Resolute Forest Products sues Greenpeace

Peter Foster:
In a welcome but all-too-rare display of corporate backbone, Montreal-based Resolute Forest Products has sued Greenpeace Canada.

...claims “damages for defamation, malicious falsehood and intentional interference with economic relations” in the amount of $5-million. It also seeks punitive damages of $2-million, plus costs.
Go, Resolute!

Eco-obsession invades medical science

I'd give these medical students a big fat FAIL for wasting their time studying this eco-obsessive topic:
Operations to replace worn out knees in Canada ... generating nearly half a million kilograms of surgical waste every year, according to a new study that says more needs to be done to "green" the nation's ORs.

... "It is imperative that efforts to promote sustainable OR practices are strengthened," they said. [There's that annoying, over-used and... abused word "sustainable" again. When I hear it, I want to reach for my 357 Magnum.]

"... average surgical waste per surgery was 13.3 kilograms. When extrapolated to the more than 47,000 knee replacements performed in Canada in 2008-09, the authors estimated knee surgeries generated 407,889 kg of landfill waste."
The "researchers" extrapolate to generate what they think are impressive levels of landfill waste.  For some real perspective, let's calculate that waste on a per capita basis: 408,000/(34 million) = .012 Kg per person = less than 1/2 of one ounce per person PER YEAR of landfill waste. Every Canadian generates many times that amount of waste on a DAILY basis much less annually.  It's a drop in the bucket.

This kind of "study" may be suitable for majors in eco-freakery or anal-efficiency, but medicine? If this is what the three medical students think important to the advancement of medical science, then, when they graduate and become MD's, please, KEEP THEM THE HELL AWAY FROM ME!

Vancouver credit union caters to eco-loons and other flakes

Vancity may divest from Enbridge over pipeline:
A famously ethical Vancouver credit union may pull millions of dollars out of Enbridge over concerns raised by its members surrounding the Northern Gateway pipeline project.
...Vancity CEO Tamara Vrooman ... "We really think that there are risks that are being pointed out by our members, by First Nations, by the public, by people in the community ...
... The divestment might not mean much to Enbridge – the energy giant's pipeline project alone carries an estimated $5.5-billion price tag – but could satisfy Vancity members who hold its ethical investment guidelines dear.
Vancity is also backing an urban farm in downtown Vancouver:

... a two-acre urban farm ... the largest city farm attempted in Vancouver ... will be tended mostly by residents of the Downtown Eastside.
... funded by the Radcliffe Foundation, which donated $475,000, and a grant from Vancity.
... the boxes will be brimming with artisan varieties of strawberries, melons, baby carrots, spinach, salad greens, daikon, radishes and other trendy, value-added edibles.
I'm sure they mean well (don't all of the "famously ethical"?), but these efforts seem more than just a tad flaky.

Update: On today's (May 11th) Vancouver Sun front page
