"One should doubtless keep an open mind...though open at both ends, like the food pipe, and have a capacity for excretion as well as intake." -- Northrop Frye, 'The Great Code'
Lawrence Solomon: Proof that a new ice age has already started is stronger than ever, and we couldn’t be less prepared
“The New Little Ice Age Has Started.” This is the unambiguous title of a new study from one of the world’s most prestigious scientific institutions, the Russian Academy of Science’s Pulkovo Observatory in St. Petersburg. “The average temperature around the globe will fall by about 1.5 C when we enter the deep cooling phase of the Little Ice Age, expected in the year 2060,” the study states. “The cooling phase will last for about 45-65 years, for four to six 11-year cycles of the Sun, after which on the Earth, at the beginning of the 22nd century, will begin the new, next quasi-bicentennial cycle of warming.”
... An overheated planet has never been a threat, say climate skeptics, not today, not ever in human history. An underheated planet, in contrast, is a threat humans have repeatedly faced over the last millennium, and now we’re due again.
Fraser Academy, the expensive Vancouver private school where last month a teacher was fired after making allegedly “triggering” remarks to a Grade 12 law class, has put its staff under a gag order.
Maureen Steltman, the school head, told Postmedia in a brief emailed statement the school “does not comment on personnel issues, even when we take issue with public inaccuracies.” ...
Christie documents a history of similar abuses by this tyrannical school head-mistress, closing with:
... As for the teacher who was dismissed last month, he received a notice this week from the Teacher Regulation Branch, telling him the Fraser Academy has “provided a report about your conduct.” He is so crushed and distraught, he said, he may voluntarily surrender his teaching certificate.
Nice! I hope that teacher can summon the nerve (and cash) to take Fraser Academy to court for wrongful dismissal and publicly expose their insanity. If he identified himself perhaps he could get some crowd funding from, say, The Rebel. I'd be willing to chip in. Or, (I hate to even suggest such a thing) failing that take the bastards to the BC Human Rights Tribunal (no cost for complainants) - on second thought, those 'social justice' morons would likely side with the school.
A teacher at a posh private school in British Columbia was fired last month after making an innocuous comment about abortion to his Grade 12 law class.
Though there is no way of knowing, since discipline matters are shrouded in secrecy, it may be the first time a Canadian teacher has been fired not amid allegations of impropriety, but for having the wrong opinion.
... Before classes even started last fall, teachers underwent serious “gender training” given by QMUNITY, an organization for LGBTQQ2S (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, questioning and two-spirit) people. Teachers were told in no uncertain terms, for instance, that “no one is 100-per-cent male or female” and that everyone is somewhere on the “gender spectrum.”
... Unsurprisingly, students at the school, where $30,000-a-year tuition buys small classes, regularly say “I’m so triggered” and are allowed to walk out of class.
... What happened to the teacher over the ensuing few days sounds like something out of the Cultural Revolution in Mao’s China, where people were subjected to what were known as ideological struggle sessions, forced to “confess” to various imagined sins before large crowds, and roundly denounced.
... Postmedia is not identifying the school at the teacher’s request. “They torched me,” he said, “but I’m reluctant to damage the brand … So many kids who would otherwise fall through the cracks … are valued and helped here,” he said.
That teacher should be encouraged to name names. The school and it's administrators need to be identified, named and shamed. This idiocy needs to be put down. The student who complained sounds like she suffers a mental illness - an illness likely contracted in her Queer studies classes. Given that the school is in Vancouver it is highly possible that much of the gender identity nonsense originates with the likes of Dr. Mary Bryson, the radically queer UBC "gender studies" professor who Christie wrote about in connection with Jordan Peterson's troubles . And, as it stands, if anyone needs a "safe space" in that school, it's the regular teachers. They need protection from sick students and their enabling administrators.
Jordan Peterson debates a hostile pair of radical social justice warriors:
Christie Blatchford's summary of the event began:
"My God, if that thing at the University of Toronto on Saturday was a debate about free speech, then the battle is already well and truly lost.
Stefan Molyneux thoroughly de-bunks leftist smears against Steve Bannon. He discusses the left's smear tactics, the hypocrisy, anti-semitism, racism and cowardice in their rhetoric about "white" nationalism. Molyneux also concludes that the left's claims to champion diversity are phony; the left is not pro-diversity, they are only "pro-all-groups-who-vote-for-the-left" - it's why, for example, they support open borders - for votes. If they thought that poor Mexican border jumpers would vote Republican instead of (overwhelmingly) Democrat, they'd be clamouring for a giant wall - diversity be damned.
At last count he had 288 electoral votes, a solid win.
Now the hard work begins. But first, I'm looking forward to enjoying watching Media Party and other rabid Trump haters' heads explode. Update: As of the evening of Nov 10 all but 20 electoral votes had been decided (NH and MI) with Trump at 290 and Clinton at 228.
In this powerful one hour interview, Jordan Peterson lets us know what makes him tick - his philosophy of life, why he is risking his job to take up the fight against and defeat the scourges of political correctness and "social justice" ideology infecting Western society, and what we can do to help:
A teaser:
Prof Peterson identifies The PC Algorithm aka The Game of Political Correctness used by social justice warriors:
1. Identify some domain of human endeavour 2. Note that some people are doing comparatively well and others poorly 3. Define the people doing well as perpetrators 4. Define those doing poorly as victims 5. Announce your support for the victims 6. Trumpet your moral superiority 7. Vent your resentment and hatred on the conveniently identified perpetrators 8. Repeat, forever.
"This requires no thought. You can teach a university student this in about two hours and indoctrinate them into doing it professionally. Our recent research indicates that one politically correct course is enough to significantly affect someone's political beliefs."
... There are more and more areas of debate in which the authorities take the view that "there is only one correct answer". A free people should be free to argue, whether they take the right side or the wrong side of the question. But, as I always say (he says wearily), when you're arguing that only one side is allowed to have a side, you're on the wrong side.
A former student has accused Janice of a human rights violation which will go to trial before the Social Justice Tribunal of Ontario. The University of Ottawa is a co-defendant in this case and is of course represented by their own lawyer. Recent cases have demonstrated quite clearly that universities are quick to throw their employees under the bus in order to appease the Social Justice mobs so the university of Ottawa cannot be trusted to protect Fiamengo. The university of Ottawa lawyer is payed to protect the University of Ottawa NOT Janice Fiamengo. Any deal offered or struck will consider only the interests of the university, the social justice tribunal, and the student. Janice Fiamengo will be considered expendable throughout this process.
The proper name for this "Social Justice" Tribunal process is "tyranny".
Her "trial" begins in six to eight months. Her legal fees have already been successfully crowd-funded.
Well, that seems pretty reasonable. But maybe the Factual Feminist hasn't caught up with the latest gender theories. For example, that "there's no such thing as biological sex."
So says Professor Jordan (shove your stupid pronouns) Peterson. Plus, a fascinating dissection of pure SJW bullshit. Professor Peterson is clearly feeling harassed and bullied and won't stand for it:
In a five to zero decision the BC Court of Appeals upheld the right of graduates of the faith-based Trinity Western University (TWU) Law School to practice law in BC. In a supposedly free society, this shouldn't come as a surprise; but in this time of rampant political correctness, with basic freedoms frequently coming under attack, it certainly gives cause for celebration.
... if you ask Hillary Clinton’s campaign operatives they would tell you “Face to Face with the PM” was a great PR scheme they would like to emulate. In some of the most recent emails dumped by Wikileaks from today, John Podesta (Clinton’s campaign chairman) and other staffers discussed and lauded the public broadcaster’s propaganda program.
... Way to go CBC! You’ve got top political players in the most powerful county in the world following your lead in creating their “staged” propaganda. You should make this a lead story. It’s about you after all, and you helped your idol, Hillary! Also, now would be a good time as ever for you to lend your sophistry to her floundering campaign.
... Myth #12: Are people the most important factor determining the Earth’s climate? Dr. Botkin says no. The processes affecting the Earth’s climate are complex and man is only a midget among giants. His discussion of this topic is quite good and familiar to this audience. I direct the curious to the book, he covers the key points well.
Myth #13 is that climate change will lead to a huge number of extinctions. The truth is that even though we are in the Quaternary ice age and have been for the past 2.6 million years, there have been very few extinctions. The climate changes, both warming and cooling, observed in the Quaternary far exceed anything predicted by the climate alarmists for the future, yet only one tree went extinct in North America in that period.
Myth #14 is that recent weather is proof of climate change. How this myth persists in mainstream news organizations, like the Economist, when every qualified scientist (alarmists and skeptics) says no weather event can be attributed to climate change is beyond understanding.
Myth #15, consensus is science. Dr. Botkin notes that science is a process of questioning ideas. Scientific statements can be tested and proven wrong, otherwise the statement is not scientific. If the statement survives the tests; it is acceptable and potentially valid. Consensus has nothing to do with scientific validity. One of the problems with the “consensus statement” that man is causing dangerous climate change is it cannot be tested. Thus, the statement is not scientific.
Myth #16 is that climate models are accurate. It is bizarre that unvalidated computer climate model predictions are considered “true” by many climate alarmists, politicians and news organizations. They haven’t successfully predicted anything to date.
... As I've said for years - on radio, TV and in print - for me the overriding issue in American politics is the corruption. In the Obama era, we have seen the remorseless merging of the party and the state - in the IRS, in the Justice Department and elsewhere. Whatever one feels about, say, Scandinavia, they at least come to their statism and socialism more or less honestly. Not so the United States. ...
... The left is serious about power, and they don't waste time. The idea that the most personally corrupt candidate in modern American history will govern as some sort of benign moderate centrist placeholder until the wankers who thought Jeb Bush was a superstar shoo-in come up with their next inspiration is utterly preposterous.
The president of the largest Roman Catholic University in America refused a conservative student group's request to post pro-life posters because it would constitute "bigotry ... under the cover of free speech."
Despite the fact that "Black Lives Matter" posters hang on the very windows of the administrative offices at Chicago-based DePaul University, President Reverend Dennis H. Holtschneider banned posters reading "Unborn Lives Matter," a message much more in keeping with Catholic teaching on the sanctity of human life, from conception to natural death. ...
When po-mo, pc identity politics start infecting the thinking at Catholic universities you know the culture war is being lost. President Holtshneider has defected to the enemy's side. Though it would appear that this has been happening for some time. And considering some of Pope Francis's rhetoric on global warming and capitalism, the entire Catholic Church is lurching in that direction.
Graeme Gordon at "Raving Canuck" has been doing a great job keeping a close eye (and ear) on that bloated, massively government funded, Liberal-(and farther left)-cheer-leading, propaganda outlet known as the CBC. Teasers from Graeme's two most recent posts:
If anyone still thought CBC’s decision to launch an “Opinion site” next month was a good idea, an op-ed published by the CBC today should set her/him sober. The hit piece—and yes, I’m aware this response is a hit piece as well, but at least it is published on my own independent blog, not paid for by taxpayers—entitled “Canadian Taxpayers Federation has 5 members—why should we care what they think?” was written by Dougald Lamont, a senior policy advisor for Liberal MP Robert-Falcon Ouellette. ...
Dear CBC Execs,Let me start off by saying you are doing an exceptional job on covering the heroic saga of Colin Kaepernick’s Rosa Parks moments of bravery. But driving home today, while faithfully tuning in to CBC Radio One, I found it tremendously problematic that your news updates about Kaepernick didn’t mention his most recent act of daring valour: his wearing of socks covered in white pig cops. ...
According to Wikileaks, at the same time Hillary Clinton was wooing the support of radical greens, at a behind closed doors meeting with pro-energy unions, she was telling those same radical greens to “get a life”.
I always liked his sound, but his lyrics? As sung by Dylan, they are pretty garbled. You need the written lyrics to know what he's singing. Don Ferguson's parodies on Royal Canadian Air Farce hilariously made that point:
... The Progressive Conservatives lost the 2015 provincial election to Notley’s New Democrats and Prentice subsequently resigned as party leader, taking a job with the Washington-based Canada Institute at the Wilson Center in February 2016, where he worked as a visiting fellow.
According to the Center, Prentice was working on a book about energy and environmental issues that was set to be published in late 2016. In June 2016 he joined the private equity firm Warburg Pincus as an energy analyst.
"We talk to a guy ... about the plight of black men raised by single moms: John Thaddeus White’s song “Dindu Nuffin” is an anthem for unarmed black men encouraging them to take responsibility for their own lives."
“Anyone who tries to predict more than five to 10 years is a bit of an idiot..."
... it is manifestly clear that he enjoys maddening the green movement. “Well, it’s a religion, really, you see. It’s totally unscientific.”
And his views on fracking?
"he has withering contempt for environmentalists’ opposition to fracking. “You see, gas in America is incredibly cheap, because of fracking,” he says. But what about the risk of triggering earthquakes? He rolls his eyes."
How about nuclear energy?
"Even more heretical than his enthusiasm for fracking is Lovelock’s passionate support for nuclear power."
And why would a rabidly left wing rag like the Guardian publish this?
"Perhaps they are testing the water, to see how readers react."[Check out the comments. But, whatever the reason, it's good publicity for the skeptical position. ]
Debate moderator, Lester Holt, interrupted Donald Trump 41 times and Hillary Clinton just 7 times. And, Holt not only interrupted Trump, he actively debated with him. Ezra Levant discusses one good example of that:
Here's Brent Bozell with a summary of the rest of it:
... Justin Trudeau should learn from Oscar Wilde’s sole novel’s protagonist. Dorian Gray appears publicly to be an honourable man of eternal youth, but underlying superficial appearances he is dissolute, lazy, narcissistic, and corrupt.
... Trudeau still has three more years, possibly many more, to determine his self-portrait–the true picture beneath all the selfies and perfectly-edited photos courtesy of his 24/7 personal photographer. He’d best heed the importance of being earnest and frugal.
... Among elites, borderlessness has taken its place among the politically correct positions of our age
... the Left continues to cherish the vision of a borderless world as morally superior, a triumph over artificially imposed difference.
... Yet the truth is that borders do not create difference—they reflect it. Elites’ continued attempts to erase borders are both futile and destructive.
Few escape petty hypocrisy when preaching the universal gospel of borderlessness:
Barack Obama has caricatured the building of a wall on the U.S. southern border as nonsensical, as if borders are discriminatory and walls never work. ... the [well armed] Secret Service is currently adding five feet to the White House fence—presumably on the retrograde logic that what is inside the White House grounds is different from what is outside.
In 2011, open-borders advocate Antonio Villaraigosa became the first mayor in Los Angeles history to build a wall around the official mayoral residence.
“You’re about to graduate into a complex and borderless world,” Secretary of State John Kerry recently enthused to the graduating class at Northeastern University ... moved his 76-foot luxury yacht from Boston Harbor across the state border to Rhode Island in order to avoid $500,000 in sales taxes and assorted state and local taxes.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg offers another case study. The multibillionaire advocates for a fluid southern border and lax immigration enforcement, but he has also stealthily spent $30 million to buy up four homes surrounding his Palo Alto estate. They form a sort of no-man’s-land defense outside his own Maginot Line fence
... Recent research by Professor Valentina Zharkova (Northumbria University) and colleagues ... suggests that the next three solar cycles will see solar activity reduce significantly into the middle of the century, producing conditions similar to those last seen in the 1600s – during the Maunder Minimum. This may have implications for temperatures here on Earth. Future solar cycles will serve as a test of the astrophysicists’ work, but some climate scientists have not welcomed the research and even tried to suppress the new findings. ...
It's predictable but still interesting how "some climate scientists" react to research producing results that don't fit their ideological narrative. These people are not scientists, they are the opposite and should be named and shamed.
According to a column in Tuesday’s National Post by Stephen Gordon (“Conservatives need to learn”), conservatives with both the upper-case and lower-case “C” are guilty of failing to regenerate themselves intellectually by thinking more like their opponents.
... according to Gordon, the benighted right is, in particular, failing to grasp the benefits of “carbon pricing.” But surely Gordon, a professor of economics, knows the difference between a market price and a tax. Has he forgotten that it was a conservative, Preston Manning, who promoted the Big Lie of not calling a carbon tax a tax? ...
In this collection of videos, starting with an interview with Charlie Rose, the late Michael Chrichton discusses what he thinks about climate and science and why he was highly skeptical of the widespread belief in climate catastrophe:
Patrick Moore with Ezra Levant yesterday: "Canada's forests are absorbing more CO2 every day than we are putting in. Canada is not only carbon neutral but carbon negative":
The Quebec "Human Rights" Tribunal ruled that Mike Ward's humor was offensive and fined him $42 grand, thereby boosting his already high popularity. This will probably make him a millionaire, and good for him. Here's Mike Ward with Gavin McInnes shortly after the ruling:
As always the truly offensive joke in these cases is the "human rights" bureaucracy.
So says Greenpeace co-founder, Patrick Moore in his latest publication. From the conclusions:
... Despite a great deal of evidence to the contrary, much of Western society has been convinced that a global warming and a climate change crisis is upon us. The idea of catastrophic climate change is a powerful one, as it encompasses everything and everywhere on Earth. There is nowhere to hide from “carbon pollution.” There is also the combination of fear and guilt: we are fearful that driving our cars will kill our grandchildren, and we feel guilty for doing so. A powerful convergence of interests among key elites supports and drives the climate catastrophe narrative. ...
... Lost in all these machinations is the indisputable fact that the most important thing about CO2 is that it is essential for all life on Earth and that before humans began to burn fossil fuels, the atmospheric concentration of CO2 was heading in a very dangerous direction for a very long time. Surely, the most “dangerous” change in climate in the short term would be to one that would not support sufficient food production to feed our own population. ... The best outcome would be that CO2 does cause some measure of warming, but somewhat lower than that suggested by extreme predictions. We should ask those who predict catastrophic climate change, including the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, some pressing questions regarding the outcome if humans had not intervened in the carbon cycle.
• What evidence is there that we are not already past the maximum global temperature during this Holocene interglacial period?
• How can we be certain that in the absence of human emissions the next cooling period would not be more severe than the recent Little Ice Age?
• Given that the optimum CO2 level for plant growth is above 1,000 ppm and that CO2 has been above that level for most of the history of life, what sense does it make to call for a reduction in the level of CO2 in the absence of evidence of catastrophic climate change?
• Is there any plausible scenario, in the absence of human emissions, that would end the gradual depletion of CO2 in the atmosphere until it reaches the starvation level for plants, hence for life on earth?
• What evidence or argument is there that the global climate would not revert to another glacial period in keeping with the Milankovitch cycles as it has done repeatedly during at least the past 800,000 years?
These and many other questions about CO2, climate and plant growth require our serious consideration if we are to avoid making some very costly mistakes.
... At the same time that the Obama Administration was arguing for the right to gather electronic data on every US citizen, including reporters, it was abandoning real leads, killing a serious terrorist investigative unit and deleting its files, and removing experts and training materials on how to identify threats, all because those things might be seen as culturally insensitive to Muslims. This is how political correctness kills, and it just set a new US record.
To sum up, the Obama Administration’s counter-terrorism strategy in 13 words:
Socialism sounds great. It has always
sounded great. And it will probably always continue to sound great. It
is only when you go beyond rhetoric, and start looking at hard facts,
that socialism turns out to be a big disappointment, if not a disaster. ...
And, as might be expected, his praise is very faint praise indeed. Some excerpts [with Den Tandt's amplifying thoughts]:
... a good prime minister [Let's try to keep the hyperbole down, shall we?]
... a smart, basically decent, hard- working guy who, for all his flaws ... [You could say that about 70+% of Canadians, so let's concentrate on those flaws!]
... a better-than-fair steward [Right, "good", but "nothing great"]
... he is not ... the ogre he has been made out to be [by his partisan opponents, especially we in the Media Party]
... For all his failings, ran a broadly stable ship [So let me remind you, again, of all those failings.]
... nothing at all likethe extremism we were led to expect [Not as extreme as his partisan opponents, especially we in the Media Party, led you to expect]
In the print version Den Tandt's column was titled: "Canada lucky to have had Harper" [Yes, after all, we could have had someone like, say, Vladimir Putin]
One supposes this is Den Tandt's idea of a polite farewell to a favourite target. In contrast, here are a couple of sample comments from people who begged to differ:
Best Prime Minister in 70 years, maybe more. He get's Canada. On the flip side,
Zoolander says Canada has no culture or identity and is the worlds first
postnational state. What an arrogant stupid insulting prick.
Harper, a pragmatic Canadian, for all Canadians. Now Zoolander is intent on
picking his interest groups at the expense of the Canadian taxpayer and
reversing Harper's policies for the benefit of all Canadians, even his
insane left wing detractors. Irrational immigration decisions, FN
secrecy, complacency regarding energy, complacency regarding prairie
fires, outrageous and damaging deficits, increasing union powers at the
expense of taxpayers,
Remember the Leap Manifesto? That was the wild-eyed ultra-greenist,
anti-capitalist dogma-sheet that Avi Lewis and Naomi Klein dragged out ... ... Kill oil. Kill all fossil fuels. No pipelines. No
refineries. Cripple the economy. Deny the poorer nations ... a cascade of unexamined and baseless assertions, a manifest distaste
for reality, a raw pulse of dogmatic certitude, and a set of
prescriptions that would obliterate a modern economy, push hundreds of
thousands out of work, and bring the industrial age back to the days of
horse cart and covered wagons for transportation. ... The authors of Leap were ... merely projecting as it were
private fantasies into the public arena. If, however, they had presented
in Ontario, if they had urged Ontario’s government with the dreams they
urged ... I suspect they would have been mocked as timid,
restrained, unimaginative, even perhaps, regressive. For the Wynne
government’s recently revealed plans for the ‘transformation of the
Ontario energy industry,” is of a reach and scope, depth and range, that
defies all comparison.
Even if there were good evidence that alarmists are right (and there isn't) Canada's contribution to global CO2 emissions is tiny and it's effect on global climate un-measurable. But politicians like Wynne (and Trudeau and ... ) behave as if the world's fate hinges on Canada (or Ontario or ...) taking the lead in sacrificing their citizens' standard of living to Gaia. This is insanely reckless. Canada has no obligation, moral or otherwise, to move any faster on this than the least committed of the largest GHG emitting nations. Doing so is not only climatically pointless, it unnecessarily risks wrecking our economy. We are being led either by nitwits or by cynical tax-grabbers or both.
University 'liberal arts' faculties (and increasingly K-12) are institutions of indoctrination that produce graduates who are dumber and lower in productive potential than when they entered. Who in their right mind would knowingly pay big bucks to put their offspring into day care like that?
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz on Tuesday suspended his presidential bid for the
Republican nomination following a crushing defeat by Donald Trump in
the Indiana primary. Cruz told dismayed supporters the path to victory had been closed.
Now watch the Media Party and its candidate Hillary really come after Trump. And vice versa. This will be fun to watch!
"Lazy liberals talk about "the right wing" as if conservatives are a
unified block. Obviously that isn't true, but this video helps explain the divisions and diversity within the Right. Along with familiar categories (alt-right, neocon) I've invented some of my own, like Broadcast Patriot and Factual Feminist. Where do you fit in?"
Commencing in mid-2013, I represented former prime minister Stephen
Harper in connection with the RCMP’s investigation of Senator Duffy. ... Now that Justice Vaillancourt has released his trial decision, it is possible to comment publicly on aspects of the case.
... Justice Vaillancourt ultimately concluded that the Crown had not proven
its criminal case against Mr. Duffy to the “beyond a reasonable doubt”
standard. But that conclusion should not be read as a contest between
Mr. Duffy and my client, in which Mr. Duffy prevailed. My client did
not, and could not, ask that Mr. Duffy be charged criminally. Nor did my
client assert that Mr. Duffy engaged in criminal wrongdoing. His
assertion was, and is, that the behaviour exhibited by Mr. Duffy was
unacceptable. It was and is my client’s view that public office demands a
higher standard than conduct that falls short of criminality.
John Ridsdel, 68, was executed Monday night by his Islamist Philippine captors, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has confirmed.
Ridsdel, along with fellow Canadian Robert Hall, was kidnapped six
months ago as he vacationed on the Philippine island of Mindanao.
Tuesday, it was confirmed that he was executed by beheading. ...
... Ridsdel was being held for ransom by the Islamist terror group Abu Sayyaf. ... the group’s name is Arabic for Bearer of the Sword — is considered a
terrorist organization by Canada, the U.S. and many other countries.
For years aligned with al-Qaida, the group ...has more recently been kidnapping people for ransom
in the name of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
For the record, the words "Islamist" and "beheading" were not uttered either by Trudeau or by any major Canadian media outlet other than the National Post.
New reactor technology under development all but eliminates waste and safety problems of the old fission reactors. It's actually a revival of an old idea, the molten salt reactor, by Transatomic Power:
... fueled by uranium or spent nuclear fuel (it burns waste)
... extremely efficient fuel utilization ... reducing the total volume of
waste by 96%. ... majority of the waste ...remains radioactive for only a few hundred years, rather than
hundreds of thousands of years.
... extremely safe (walk-away safe), and does not
require active cooling, even in the worst-case accident scenarios.
... molten salt remains liquid at atmospheric pressure, even at the very
high temperatures present in a nuclear reactor ... does not require a full containment
dome ...
This seems to have a lot of potential. False bogeyman though CO2 emissions are, Transatomic's sales pitch hypes the global warming scare as a reason to go nuclear, but that's pretty standard these days.
One of the more forceful lines of Stephen Lewis’s speech in Edmonton in
support of the Leap Manifesto last weekend was his forceful takedown of
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the question of the sale of arms to
Saudi Arabia. After complimenting Trudeau for his florid embrace of
feminism, he gave a quite deft turn of the knife by asking how Trudeau
the feminist could justify selling arms to Saudi Arabia, a “regime
steeped in misogyny.”
An equally just critique may be made of a certain Leap-authoring social
justice activist. So it is fair, I think, to borrow the rhetorical
firecracker Stephen Lewis tossed at Trudeau and lob it toward his son,
Avi Lewis. Here the question is: can someone with an advanced social
conscience work as a “journalist” for the kingdom of Qatar, as Avi did? ...
... what we had in Edmonton last weekend was two white, old-stock,
privileged, celebrity males global-warming-splaining oil-cursed Alberta
to its pioneer NDP, female premier.
... the Canadian media has actually reversed the realities of the story
180 degrees. What is being falsely presented as a story of a scrappy
prime minister resisting a hostile press is actually a story of a
slavishly subservient press who are actively shaping their reporting to
suit the government’s needs.
It is a disgrace.
Same goes for the fawning Vanity Fair:
Squee doesn’t seem adequate for this. Squeezers? Squeecaramba? Squeemapalomablanca? https://t.co/dXWTqEiqEv
During the “hottest year ever”, we had this yesterday for the opening
day of Baseball in Pittsburgh between the Pirates and the Cardinals:
Pittsburgh temps in mid-30s ...
...more than 20°F below normal for April 4th around Boston. ... close to 1881 record low of 20°F ...
... In the wake of government action around the world, industrial plants are
closing, so-called green operations are failing, prices are soaring,
subsidies are rampant, jobs are being lost, competitiveness eroded and
energy consumers, especially the poor, are threatened by regressive
carbon taxes. ...
To call this a policy inconsistency is to overtax understatement. It is
logically irreconcilable. Should Bombardier find swift favour with the
new Liberal government, there will be far more at stake than the writing
of the cheque.
The City for All Women Initiative (CAWI) organization, backed by the City Council of Ottawa, is hosting the Ottawa Hijab Solidarity Day celebration, also called “Walking with Our Muslims Sisters,” at City Hall.
You'd think feminists might more logically sponsor a "Ditch the Hijab Day: Celebrating Freedom from Shariah Patriarchy." But they won't because they're feminist dimwits.
Notley's recent attempt to directly censor journalists she doesn't like is one thing. A more insidious form of corruption has been politicians' blatant [legal?] bribing of journalists and media outlets they do like.
... The CBC is the obvious example. In the recent federal election, the NDP
and Liberals battled for the hearts and minds of the CBC’s journalists.
Thomas Mulcair started the bidding with a promise of a $115 million
annual CBC bonus if he were elected. Not to be outdone, Trudeau upped
the ante to a whopping $150 million. The politicians were brazen: they
were offering the journalists who cover them a success fee[using taxpayers' money] if they were
elected.
... The Canadian Media Guild, the journalists’ union that
dominates the CBC as well as The Canadian Press newswire, formally
registered as a “third-party” campaign group with Elections Canada, ... Every unionized journalist covering the
election was contributing part of their own salary to an anti-Harper
election effort.
... It’s not just CBC journalists who are corrupted by being politicians’
pets. Journalists at private media are, too. As they nervously polish up
their LinkedIn resumes, they can’t help but notice that the only major,
national news organization still hiring is the CBC ... How many private sector journalists are tailoring their own work now to
mirror the editorial line of the CBC where they hope to be in six
months?
"We’ve heard a lot of feedback from Albertans and media over the course
of the last two days and it’s clear we made a mistake. The government
has appointed former Western Canadian Bureau Chief for Canadian Press,
Heather Boyd to consult and give us recommendations on what the
government’s media policies should be. In the meantime, no one will be
excluded from government media events."
If you needed reminding, the most absurd phrase in the English language is: "Prime Minister Justin Trudeau". New immigrants shouldn't have much difficulty learning it.
... The CBC coverage of last election cycle should leave no doubt in Canadians’ minds that the CBC is the cheer-leading captain of our new government
... notes on CBC’s incestuous ties to the LPC:
- A couple of CBC
executives took leave-of-absences so they could campaign with the LPC; -The union representing many CBC journalists registered to campaign
against the Conservatives last election; - A former CBC journalist who
covered federal politics recently wrote about how the new defence
minister is “bad ass” is now working and writing press releases for that
very same “bad ass”; - And the LPC has promised to give the CBC an
additional 150 million dollars to its one billion dollar annual subsidy
(essentially bribing the network for immensely favourable coverage of
Trudeau).
... evidence supporting the propaganda charge against CBC’s special, “Face
to Face”, is the reality-TV-like-quality of the production. It was odd
that Peter Mansbridge and producers thought it appropriate to start each
interview with the repetitive camera shot of the
PM’s-glossy-wooden-door-with-gilded-lettering being opened by each
contestant and then Trudeau purring each time, “Welcome to the Prime
Minister’s office.”
... Speaking in his best, ‘I’m reading you a bedtime story’ cadence, Trudeau said that Canada is stronger than ISIS. ...
Troubling worldview indeed, delivered as smug, sanctimonious, delusional platitudes befitting a junior high school valedictorian. And he's blindly rehashing his daddy's famous "reason over passion" motto (and deeply held lib/left belief).
A divided Supreme Court on Tuesday abruptly halted President Obama's
controversial new power plant regulations, dealing a blow to the
administration's sweeping plan to address global warming.
In a 5-4 decision, the court halted enforcement of the plan until after legal challenges are resolved.
The surprising move is a victory for the coalition of
27 mostly Republican-led states and industry opponents that call the
regulations "an unprecedented power grab." ...
... To convince the high court to temporarily halt the plan, opponents had
to convince the justices that there was a "fair prospect" the court
would strike down the rule.
Jason Agnew notes the absurdities and the exciting possibilities:
Since what's good for the goose must be good for the gander, let's
force indigenous students to take mandatory courses in the foundations of Western civilization, say, in CAPITALISM.
That would do them a hell of a lot more good than "indigenous studies"
would do us.
And while we're at it lets make that course in capitalism mandatory for all
non-aboriginal students as well. They won't get it any other way. That might help offset the brain damage being done by those studies in
the-rosy-side-of-Marxism that most of them are getting now.
If this doesn't prove that, like Trudeau himself, Sajjan is "just not ready", nothing will: Negotiate with ISIS, climate change a cause of the Syrian civil war and the rise of ISIS. Good grief!!
They claim to be doing it to save the planet but it won't alter the climate an iota. Their actions only hamper Canadian production and all the benefits that derive from it. Global oil production won't decrease, it is steadily increasing; Canada's share of that production (which is already small) will just get even smaller and so will our entire economy. In the name of phony global salvation, Canadians are being screwed, by our own know-nothing "leaders" and activists:
We've seen this anti-oil, anti-western story before under Pierre
Trudeau, and it doesn't end well for anyone. If Quebec Liberals like
Justin Trudeau and Denis Coderre block Energy East, not only will it
mean economic devastation, but it will be a great cause of national
disunity -- possibly even rekindling western separatism.
... Coderre’s stance represents more than a casual alliance between Not in
My Backyard, NIMBY, and Not on Planet Earth, NOPE. It represents part of
a much larger UN-based Green Agenda to delegitimize national
governments from above and below....
... if everybody gets to have a say on everything, nothing ever gets done.
Thus the Act Local crowd really only wants everybody to have a say on
things they want to stop.
More from Ezra on the Liberals' hypocritical war on western oil (and on no one else's):
Personally, I'm all for rekindling western separatism.
