New AFN Chief of chiefs elected
Saskatchewan Chief Perry Bellegarde has won the leadership of the Assembly of First Nations after just one ballot. Of the 464 ballots cast among chiefs, he easily exceeded the more than 60 per cent needed to win ...
And
nothing will change:
... the AFN, despite its name and high profile, doesn’t represent the
natives of Canada. It represents the chiefs. There are more than 630 of
them, and they are no more capable of reaching a workable consensus on
contentious issues than are the premiers of Canada’s provinces, which
number only 10.

You did not think this post through. No Canadian votes for Steven Harper as PM. He is selected as leader by the Conservative Party. He rules that party with an iron fist. Now we are stuck with gay marriage and abortion because he won't do anything. And the Party won't get rid of him.
Anonymous you did not think your 2nd last sentence through. We are stuck with gay marriage and abortion because the supreme court will ensure we are. Has nothing to do with Harper.
Harper has a country to run. He is not about to waste energy and political capital on reviving lost battles.
I agree, Lorne. Though do I think the Cons could (try to) do something about abortion - and deep down I wish they would - I also don't think it's worth the political risk.
JR abortion is murder. You are saying screw the babies because you might lose an election. That captures exactly my understanding of Conservatives. Principle goes out the window, even when lives are at stake, in order to get votes. There is a special place in hell for good people who sell their soles for votes.
PS. There is a notwithstanding clause that allows the Harper Government to trump the Courts. Harper won't use it.
