Who are the world's #1 killers of journalists?

Surprise! "Islamic militants ..."
What made this story somewhat noteworthy is that it appeared in The Huffington Post. They still can't embrace the word "terrorists" though, and use "militants" instead. That makes the bad guys sound a bit more plucky, and like they may have some legitimate grievances.

Journalists have gotten so used to running interference for radical Islam that they can't even stop when their own are being slaughtered. Then again, this sadly may be the only reason that any honesty whatsoever is brought to reporting about terrorism.

Climate crisis? Horse pucky*!

Lorrie Goldstein:
Ever since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his gigantic delegation of Canadian politicians returned from the Paris climate conference they’ve been throwing around the idea of “decarbonizing” the Canadian and global economies [as directed by Lib eco-freak puppeteer, Gerald Butts.]
To which one can only respond: “Oy, vey. ...”

New study shows NOAA exaggerated U.S. warming

James Delingpole:
Another week, another study showing that our official climate data gatekeepers have been exaggerating the extent of “global warming” to make it look more scary, more urgent, more desperately in need of extra funding for our official climate data gatekeepers…
This one, co-authored by meteorologist Anthony Watts (of Watts Up With That? fame) shows that at least half of the “global warming” in the US since 1979 has been fabricated by NOAA.
Judith Curry and Anthony Watts comment:
Curry: This looks like a solid study.  The participation of John Nielsen-Gammon in this study is particularly noteworthy; Watts writes:
Watts: "Dr. John Nielsen-Gammon, the state climatologist of Texas, has done all the statistical significance analysis and his opinion is reflected in this statement from the introduction ...Dr. Nielsen-Gammon has been our worst critic from the get-go ..."

Papal encyclical on global warming splits the church

WUWT:
The papal Laudato Si’ encyclical on global warming .... has prompted reportedly heated exchanges between senior church figures, at a recent top level meeting in Rome.
"...Argentinean Bishop ... Sorondo, a close advisor to Pope Francis ... stressed that the pope’s declarations on the gravity of global warming ... are magisterial teaching equivalent to the teaching that abortion is sinful
... Father Joseph Fessio, SJ ... who obtained his doctorate in theology under Joseph Ratzinger ... told LifeSiteNews, “Neither the pope nor Bishop Sorondo can speak on a matter of science with any binding authority, so to use the word ‘magisterium’ in both cases is equivocal at best, and ignorant in any case.” Fr. Fessio added, “To equate a papal position on abortion with a position on global warming is worse than wrong; it is an embarrassment for the Church.” "

Trudeau's cabinet gender quota - "a harm to women and to Canada"

Janice Fiamengo:  "'Because it's 2015' - a pretty good non-answer to defend a female quota at the highest level of government.  ... Anyone who has doubts about Trudeau's cabinet has been told in no uncertain terms to keep his feelings to himself."

A good example of Trudeau's (and liberals' in general) blind commitment to stupid, feel-good, platitude-driven policy.

Here are all of Fiamengo's videos.

Radical feminism at Simon Fraser University (just for example)

David Thompson "And Yet They Want to Teach Us":
Janice Fiamengo pokes through the mental wreckage of some standard feminist boilerplate, in which facts are either absent or inverted, questions are begged at a rate of knots, and criticism of feminist assumptions is equated with both racism and “co-ordinated campaigns of terror.”

Professor Fiamengo discusses the feminist inability to understand and avoid the logical fallacies while
promoting hatred of men at Simon Fraser University (SFU)

Obama names HAMAS sympathizer as new ISIS Czar

Incredible:
President Obama has appointed a foreign policy advisor known to be a friend of the terrorist group Hamas to be the administration’s new czar in charge of countering ISIS. The appointee, Robert Malley, has a history of sympathizing with Islamists, which makes the appointment all the more appalling.
Fearful of losing Jewish voters, Obama severed ties with Malley in May of 2008 when it was disclosed that he had held meetings with Hamas. One day after the election, it was reported that Malley had been dispatched to the Middle East to work on Obama's promise to "improve ties with Egypt and Syria."

Bill Maher to Christia Freeland, on Islam - "people like you are the problem"

On Bill Maher's Real Time, Christia Freeland, one of our prize new Liberal cabinet ministers, plays the cultural and moral relativism cards to defend Islam.  Maher says "... people like you are the problem".

Good grief! What a moron - an all too typically liberal moron.

Maher couldn't have been more right. But he could have been a lot more brutal about it, like he would have been were he debating a conservative.

Update: Here's JJ McCullough on the same theme.

Paris terror attacks: The Israelis did it!

Palestinian Authority blames Israel:
Even known Islamic radical groups have condemned the Islamic State (ISIS) for the horrific coordinated terror attacks in Paris ...

However, the Palestinian Authority (PA) stood out for saying that the bombings and shootings claimed by the ISIS should be blamed on Israel.

... The PA ... believes that Israel's spy agency, the Mossad, was responsible for the bombings, according to a statement posted on its official newspaper, WND reported.

Dion's new Green Shift

From my little local newspaper, Peace Arch News, an excellent editorial by Tom Fletcher:
Foreign Affairs Minister Stéphane Dion served as environment minister under ... Paul Martin. Then, as Liberal leader, Dion’s proposed “green shift” carbon tax was pivotal only in ending his leadership. With a majority government this time, he promises the entire federal cabinet will be involved.

Dion gave a revealing interview to The Globe and Mail last week about his experience in government.
“The old system was to give the file of the environment to the minister of the environment and say, ‘deal with it, be the hero of the environment groups, but don’t bother us because we have jobs to create and an economy to grow’,” Dion said. “That will not work.”
It certainly didn’t work, which is not surprising since Dion is admitting the Liberals considered the environment ministry a mere public relations tool. This was the period when Canada signed on to the Kyoto Protocol, then pretended to care about it as the United States rejected it in a unanimous vote of Congress.

... Dion’s ill-fated “green shift” wasn’t just about greenhouse gases. He intended to impose a national carbon tax and use the proceeds to eliminate child poverty.

This concept is back, on a global scale. ...

Liberals' "absolute resolve" in the face of terror

Jason Kenney:
The only "resolve" we can expect from Liberals will be to withdraw our CF-18s from the fight, take in 25,000 unscreened Syrian refugees before Christmas and give away the farm at the Paris Climate Lollapalooza.

A liberal vegan environmetalist switches to AGW skepticism

An essay by David Seigel spells out the how and why. He includes a warmist rebuttal and his response to that.  It's long read but well worth it.

Are there Jihadis in Canada?

Of course there are. Some are in jail.  Others are in hiding.  Others are busy spreading the word:
CanadianJihad.ca documents public statements made by Canadian imams, Muslim scholars, and Islamic activists who advocate extremist ideas that undermine Canadian principles of freedom, democracy, pluralism, the rule of law, respect for minorities and the separation of mosque and state. In some cases, it shows Muslim leaders actually promoting violence, including murdering infidels.

Terrorists came as refugees via Greece

Breaking:

Barbarians at the gates

... except "there are no gates".  Mark Steyn:
... When the Allahu Akbar boys opened fire, Paris was talking about the climate-change conference due to start later this month, when the world's leaders will fly in to "solve" a "problem" that doesn't exist rather than to address the one that does. But don't worry: we already have a hashtag (#PrayForParis) and doubtless there'll be another candlelight vigil of weepy tilty-headed wankers. Because as long as we all advertise how sad and sorrowful we are, who needs to do anything?

With his usual killer comedy timing, the "leader of the free world" told George Stephanopoulos on "Good Morning, America" this very morning that he'd "contained" ISIS and that they're not "gaining strength". A few hours later, a cell whose members claim to have been recruited by ISIS slaughtered over 150 people in the heart of Paris ...

What's the happy ending here? Because if M Hollande isn't prepared to end mass Muslim immigration to France and Europe, then his "pitiless war" isn't serious. And, if they're still willing to tolerate Mutti Merkel's mad plan to reverse Germany's demographic death spiral through fast-track Islamization, then Europeans aren't serious. In the end, the decadence of Merkel, Hollande, Cameron and the rest of the fin de civilisation western leadership will cost you your world and everything you love.
So screw the candlelight vigil.

Breaking: Paris Terror Attacks Kill More Than 100

NYT:
A hostage situation at the Bataclan concert hall came to an end on Friday night when French police raided the building, according to French television, who quoted the police as saying at least 100 people had been killed there.
Dozens more died in apparently coordinated attacks outside the country’s main sports stadium and at least five other popular locations in the city.
More: What about COP21?

And by all means, let's implore the nitwit Liberals to bring in even more Syrian migrants, and by Christmas, security checks be damned!

Axis of Idiocy

Theo Caldwell on how to deal with liberals in the coming years:
... I propose that we keep taking the piss out of them for the next four years at least, until we are hoarse and our ribs ache from laughing. Not only will this numb the pain and pass the time, but liberals are at their preening, unattractive worst when on the business end of humour. ...

Global warming alarmist "sausage" machines

Climate computer models are what alarmists use to push AGW alarm.  But, like sausages, what goes into them isn't very pretty.  For a glimpse, read Inside the Climate Computer Models :
... The harsh reality is that any science is wrong if its mathematics is wrong. The mathematics of the climate models’ internal workings is wrong.
From all of the above, it is clear that no matter how much more knowledge and effort is put into the climate models, and no matter how many more billions of dollars are poured into them, they can never be used for climate prediction while they retain the same basic structure and methodology.

Remembrance

In Flanders fields the poppies grow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead.
Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Keystone XL: Obama's "Big Lies"

Peter Foster's list:
... His first Big Lie was to suggest that Keystone XL was an export pipeline.

He also lied by omission in failing to mention that it would also carry U.S. crude.

He blandly declared that Keystone XL would not serve “the national interest of the United States.” ...

... He claimed that Keystone would be “neither be a silver bullet for the economy, as was promised by some, nor the express lane to climate disaster proclaimed by others.” But while there is no doubt that radical environmentalists such as James Hansen had claimed that approving Keystone XL would be “game over” for the planet, no supporter had ever suggested that it would be an economic panacea.

... Obama weaseled that “The pipeline would not make a meaningful long-term contribution to our economy,” but then what is his idea of “meaningful?”

... Obama’s claim that the pipeline would not contribute to energy security was his next whopper. The U.S. still imports more than 4 million barrels a day from countries apart from Canada. They are all human rights abusers.

... Inevitably, he pulled out the “dirty” oil card, even though oil imported into the U.S. from Venezuela has a similar emissions profile.

... Obama then launched into fantasies about the success of virtuous “clean” investments

... before reaching the main reason for the pipeline’s rejection: it would have “undercut” America’s “global leadership,” which is to say his own political legacy.
... In sum, Justin Trudeau’s new government has just been thrown under the wheels of Obama’s mammoth self-regard, but all Justin can do is issue a press release declaring that he is “disappointed.”
Obama, Liar-in-Chief.  But I doubt that Trudeau is very disappointed.  Nor is his Gerald Butts' new Environment Minister, Catherine ("#CanadaIsBack") McKenna.

NOAA hypes "extreme weather" agitprop

For climate alarmists, “extreme” weather events are considered irrefutable evidence of AGW and its harmful effects.  They hype extreme weather agitprop relentlessly.  Even the once reputable National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has been subverted for the purpose.  However NOAA’s “explanations”, come riddled with disclaimers, speculation, contradiction and uncertainty:
... I would be a lot more impressed if NOAA could explain the extreme events of 2016, rather than trying to retrofit alarmist explanations to events they have no skill to predict. Starting with an assumption that an anthropogenic effect is playing a substantial role is not the same as demonstrating that this is the case.

Obama finally decides ...

... to kill Keystone XL:
The Keystone XL project, age 7, passed away on Friday, the victim of protracted political gamesmanship.
... On Friday morning, Barack Obama dragged the catatonic patient to the steps of the U.S. State Department and shot it dead. It might have even been merciful if only he had had the nerve to do it sooner.
“The critical factor in my determination was this: moving forward with this project would significantly undermine our ability to continue leading the world in combating climate change,” read a statement from Secretary of State John Kerry, written with what we can only presume was a straight face.
As the headline said:  "Keystone XL ... choked on political baloney"

More, by Claudia Cattaneo
Canadians of every political persuasion should be dismayed by U.S. President Barack Obama’s cowardly rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline. [Most are dismayed but there's no shortage of leftist, eco-nut traitors cheering the decision.]

The Media Party and Liberal Party consummate their romance

"Honeymoon is usually a just a metaphor, but yesterday it was a true conjugal merger":

Now the new young King of all Good Causes will move, accompanied by a 30-member cabinet of diversity and inclusiveness, of young innocents and ancient backroom hackers, to the next phase of what promises to be one of the most painful political adventures in the history of the Dominion of Canada.

Climate fascism on the move

New York’s attorney general is investigating whether Exxon Mobil lied about climate change risks:
The New York attorney general has begun a sweeping investigation of Exxon Mobil to determine whether the company lied to the public about the risks of climate change or to investors about how those risks might hurt the oil business.
According to people with knowledge of the investigation, Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman issued a subpoena Wednesday evening to Exxon Mobil, demanding extensive financial records, emails and other documents.
Does anyone know with any certainty at all what "climate change risks" really are?  This is looks like a witch hunt.  It would be a lot more fruitful for the AG zealots to investigate whether the UN IPCC "lied" about climate change risks.  They've been exaggerating warming and climate risks for decades.

Rebuilding the right

Ezra Levant's appeal:

Good idea Ezra. But it's a monumental task, one on which the left has a head start of more than a century and now dominates the education system and the media, to name just two of the most important cultural influences.

But it's gotta be done, somehow, or we're truly f..., er, doomed.

Conservatism makes what liberalism takes

Greg Gutfeld on "Why the Right is Right":  "Conservatism doesn't compete with liberalism, it sustains it":

Try and tell that to the 68% of Canadians who voted for liberalism, or worse, last week.  Someone has to try.  Meanwhile, conservatism, whether or not that 68% acknowledges it, will motor on making stuff for liberals to take.

Ignore the UN and you'll live longer

New front page scare story.  This time it's a stepped-up warning from WHO about carcinogenic food:
On Monday, the World Health Organization delivered a wallop on the unsuspecting public: hotdogs cause cancer ....
So what else is new?  If it isn't scary speculation about global warming it's scary speculation about food.

Ignore the UN.  Your anxiety levels will drop and you'll live longer.

Also from this story, one of my pet peeves:
"... commonplace medical advice: don’t eat junk food and take everything else in moderation."
That's not bad advice, but there's no such thing as junk food.  There are only junk diets.  So, if you take everything in moderation, including what people insist on labeling as "junk" food, you'll do fine.   Even moderation should be taken in moderation. Pig out once in a while!

Another strike against Peter MacKay

In March of this year Justice Minister Peter MacKay appointed Marie-Claude Landry, Ad.E., as the Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission for a seven-year term.

Since then it has become increasingly apparent that she is little more than partisan activist who has little understanding of either "human rights" or her own role as an appointed government employee (aka "hack").  Immediately following boy-Justin's big victory she proved this beyond a doubt by releasing this partisan affront to common sense.

Ezra Levant elaborates:

Imagine the damage that will be done by this nimrod with the Trudeau Liberal nimrods in power!

Were the choices of possible conservative appointees completely non-existent?  And even if that were so could Peter MacKay not have found even one Liberal with half a clue?  Horrible judgement, Peter!  We lose! Big time!

How to stamp out cultural Marxism

In a single generation:
It is ... no mistake that cultural Marxists in the form of "social justice warriors", PC busybodies and feminists tend to create artificial divisions between people and “classes” while attacking and homogenizing very real and natural divisions between individuals based on biological reality and inherent genetic and psychological ability.

... The insane lie that cultural Marxists seem to have conned themselves and others into believing is that their “activism” is somehow anti-establishment. In fact, social justice is constantly coddled and supported by the establishment. ... Cultural Marxists ARE the establishment.

The conservative and anti-Russian era of Stephen Harper has thus ended.

And no doubt China's basic dictators will be just as happy.

They know a pushover when they see one.

Our new "leader" and "The triumph of drivel"

David Warren:
... We are in a new political era

... Now we have “airheads.” The term is perhaps over-colloquial, but I think it best expresses the quality our new leaders share

... The Trudeau boy is a generation younger.  In addition to snowboarding, his experience includes nightclub bouncer, and teaching high school in Vancouver. ...  the lad was not really exposed to politics until it came into his head, or into the heads of Liberal Party organizers,

... His acceptance speech last night was sort-of sweet; it showed him still quite damp behind the ears.

... I don’t think he is especially malicious. ... has the media savvy of the selfie generation, and can more or less handle the bofferball questions from a sympathetic press. His sincerity shines when it comes to a small range of policy enthusiasms, such as the legalization of marijuana and brothels, and he is visibly convinced that peace is much nicer than war.

... I’m sure he “believes” in the drivel he is mouthing. I expect he will prove more used than using, as his government agenda falls into place.

Trudeau's retreat from the war against ISIS

Tarek Fatah also points out Gen Rick Hillier's views on the need for greater Canadian participation went unheeded.  Though Trudeau did like Hillier's support for accepting more refugees.

So, true to his word, Justin is following through on his pledge to take in refugees while simultaneously enabling ISIS to create more of them.

The incredible rise of a lightweight

The rise of Justin Trudeau has been like the rise of a helium balloon.  A celebrity lightweight with an inflated ego and sense of entitlement - arising entirely from his accident of birth - Justin was released and wafted aloft by the LPC and a liberal dominated mainstream media that has never stopped idolizing, mythologizing and worshipping his father Pierre as their secular god.  The son of "god", Justin, born on Christmas day no less, has been afforded similar adoration - as a Liberal Party messiah.  The liberal media propaganda machine inflated Justin's image and minimized or ignored his gaffes while relentlessly and viciously demonizing the "Nixonian" enemy, Stephen Harper.   That's how a completely unqualified lightweight, the lightest in Canadian history, came to be elected Prime Minister last night.

Having the Liberals undeservedly returned to power from third place is bad enough, but having to accept the foppish boy-Justin as my Prime Minister is absolutely galling.  You can't blame Justin, it's not his fault he was born a Trudeau, but to think that someone, anyone, with a resume as thin as his could go from backbench MP to party leader to Prime Minister on his first try, is incredible.

The evil Koch brothers

Here's one of them - the mild mannered, 79 year old gentleman, Charles:
"... My main difference with Hillary is on the vision of what kind of society makes people's lives better - [Hillary's (and all Democrats')] is a vision of society in which people are too evil or stupid to run their own lives but those in power are perfectly capable of running everybody elses' lives because they're so much smarter.  It's what Hayek called "the fatal conceit" or William Easterly called "the tyranny of experts" because that's what it is, tyranny.
... [government] waste and spending are heading us towards a financial cliff ... The reason we tend to support Republicans is they're taking us towards the cliff at only 70 miles an hour and the Democrats are taking us at 100 miles an hour. ..."

KDS (Koch Derangement Syndrome) is HDS on stilts. Even Obama has it.

Fighting Harper hatred

Two outstanding columns in today's FP:

Peter Foster:  Vote against hate:
If a man is defined by his enemies, Stephen Harper still has a lot going for him in the dying days of this election campaign. On balance, he has been a good Prime Minister in trying times, and yet he drives people to frenzies of hatred, which says far more about them than him. ...

Lawrence Solomon: Judging Harper:
Stephen Harper may be the worst prime minister in memory, as many claim. Or the best. You be the judge. ...
... On energy and the environment, Harper has been a tightwad. His predecessors in both Liberal and Conservative parties subsidized the development of the tar sands. Harper phased out these subsidies.
...money in people’s hands isn’t the only measure of well being. Canada ranks among the top 10 nations of the world in having the World’s Most Open Governments, in the Social Progress Index, in the Soft Power 30 Index, and in the World Happiness ranking, and we are the absolute top in Best Country for Business in the G20, and Best GDP growth among the G7 nations. Not surprisingly, when you put all this together, Canada landed in the #1 spot as the most respected nation in the world, based on a survey of 48,000 people around the world conducted by the Reputation Institute, which ranked 55 nations for perceived trust, admiration and respect.
These columns deserve front page exposure.

Harper Derangement Syndrome on dislay at CPC rally in Surrey, BC

As the election draws closer, Harper Derangement Syndrome seems to be intensifying.  On the way into the CPC campaign rally in Surrey last night, a guy walked back and forth on the sidewalk across the street shouting vile insults at rally-goers lining up outside the venue.  It was funny, weird and at the same time disturbing because he seemed genuinely nuts.

And inside the venue, during Stephen Harper's speech, three more "protesters" managed to infiltrate the rally.  One unfurled a banner calling for "climate justice" (don't we all know Harper is a climate criminal?), another rushed towards Harper (aiming to do what wasn't clear) getting within a foot of him before being tackled by security guards, and shortly after a third started shouting at Harper from the audience before being grabbed and hustled out.

All in all, it was described by reporters as "the worst security breach of the campaign". The security people really started looking worried after the fracas (for their jobs, maybe?)

The left's "dog-whistles"

Father Raymond de Souza: "Who, exactly, are the dogs in Mayor Nenshi’s imagination?"
Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi doesn’t like the dog whistles in the federal election campaign. Who is whistling and who are the dogs?

“Dog-whistle politics” is what they call it, and it is not a lovely term. It comes from the world of campaign consultants, and that is not a lovely world. ...

... I object to the characterization of those who do not see the world in the same way as Nenshi cast in the role of the dogs.  ...
Nenshi and his ilk don't seem to realize that the term "dog-whistle" (likely an MSNBC host's brain-f*rt) is itself the left's dog-whistle signal to its bigoted dog-packs to attack their opponents with accusations of racism.

Blatant CBC Election Bias

Since I refuse to watch the CBC I only suspect that it is following its usual pathetic pattern of political bias.  Graeme C. Gordon confirms this in his excellent piece "The CBC's Insolent Election Bias":
As Canada’s federal election is less than a month away, the CBC is now a full-fledged left-wing partisan mouthpiece. If you thought the BBC was bad, it has nothing on its bastardized clone. Canada’s public broadcaster—despite its cute mandate to reflect the views of all Canadians—has devoted itself to mocking Conservative Leader Prime Minister Stephen Harper, all the while lauding and defending Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau. ...

... Ontario now qualifies for equalization payments, confirming its shift from “have” to “have-not” status within Confederation.  The government’s response was more government spending financed by deficits that doubled its total debt over the past decade.

... In economic policymaking, Ontario has become the Eighth Blunder of the World. Instead of focusing on policies that would encourage economic growth, the Wynne government is following the maritime province’s tactic of begging the federal government for more transfer payments.

Massive new global cooling process dicovered

Just in time for the Paris global warming hysterics:
According to a study by the Institute of Catalysis and Environment in Lyon (IRCELYON, CNRS / University Lyon 1) and the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS), the oceans are producing unexpectedly large quantities of isoprene – a volatile organic compound (VOC) – which is known to have a cooling effect on climate.
... The news could scarcely have come at a worse time for the global climate alarmist community which has been ramping up the scaremongering message in the run up to the latest round of UN climate talks in Paris this December.

Notley challenged to stop slagging Alberta's air quality

Friends of Science:
Friends of Science Society is challenging Alberta’s Premier Rachel Notley to clear the air before the Paris COP-21 climate change conference, regarding statements she made about Alberta’s air quality and environmental track record. ...
... According to the World Health Organization, Canada has the third best air quality in the world ... with both Calgary and Edmonton ranked in the top ten best air quality cities in Canada ...

... Premier Notley spoke to the Alberta Chambers of Commerce on Sept. 22, 2015, claiming that Alberta’s air quality was poor and ... Friends of Science reject this statement pointing out the hypocrisy of bowing to the pressure UN Climate Change policy advocates ...
And what's the Paris meeting all about? Michelle Stirling knows:

Russia Launches Airstrikes in Nothern Syria

Russian warplanes began bombarding Syrian opposition targets in the war-torn nation's north Wednesday, following a terse meeting at which a Russian general asked Pentagon officials to clear out of Syrian air space and was rebuffed, Fox News has learned.
... The strikes hit targets in Homs and Hama, but there is no presence of ISIS in those areas
So, Putin is bombing Syrian rebel forces being supported by the Obama coalition.  When Obama met with Putin for 90 minutes in New York this week you have to wonder what the "pixie dust president"  gave away this time.

Climate alarmist outrage of the week

Scientists demand Obama use the RICO Act to silence climate skeptics:
... Twenty alarmist climate scientists – including UN IPCC lead author Kevin ‘Travesty’ Trenberth – have written a letter to President Obama urging him to use RICO laws to crush dissent by climate skeptics. Their hypocrisy and dishonesty, especially that of the main signatory, almost defies belief.....

The Pope - a political hybrid

Peter Foster: Papal fundamentalism
... The Pope does not fit into normal political categories. He is a hybrid of social conservatism and socialism, which made his speech an inevitable mixed bag, a platter of papal platitudes peppered with elements of controversy, some carefully-padded, some not.

Buy the F-35!

It's still Canada's best bet as a replacement for the F-18:
... a competition would be a costly and largely pointless process.

... it is clear that cancelling the F-35 procurement will not result in tens of billions of dollars saved, nor serve any of Canada’s longstanding interests. The men and women who will operate Canada’s future fighter deserve better.
The above conclusions are based on the current fly-away cost per aircraft (using the F/A-18E Super Hornet as a comparison).  This is in contrast with  this partisan analysis which uses scary looking full life-cycle costing.

Fly-away cost is the simplest and most realistic basis for comparison.  Any aircraft of roughly similar capability will incur similar life cycle (operation, maintenance, supply and upgrade) costs.  The most important differences will be seen in the bang for fly-away buck. It's the way we all make decisions for big ticket purchases.

Unfortunately, politics, not cost or capability, will be the biggest factor in the decision, with Trudeau's promise to scrap the F-35 procurement sounding like Chretien's costly scrapping of the Sea King replacement in 1993 (we're still waiting for the replacement to be completed).

Hillary comes out against Keystone XL

But does so under cover of the Pope's visit:
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has come out against the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline. It's something she has spent months avoiding taking a position on — and her announcement coincided with the mass media event of Pope Francis' landing at Andrews Air Force Base.

About those Syrian migrants/refugees

Germany: Migrants' Rape Epidemic  [via]
Where are the women?
... The increase in sex crimes in Germany is being fueled by the preponderance of Muslim males among the mix of refugees/migrants entering the country.
... At least 80% of the incoming refugees/migrants are Muslim ...
... The asylum seekers are also overwhelmingly male. Of the 411,567 refugees/migrants who have entered the European Union by sea so far this year, 72% have been male, 13% women and 15% children
How does this not give cause for huge security concerns?

A related side note: During the leaders' debate yesterday Stephen Harper said that Mulcair and Trudeau "would throw open our borders to hundreds of thousands of refugees ... no security checks or documents".   This got the excitable Terry Glavin excited; and when Norman Spector tried to calm him down a mini Twitter kerfuffle ensued.

An encouraging poll

Trudeau in trouble in Papineau riding:
35 per cent ... for the Liberal leader. ...
NDP candidate ... at 46 per cent.
A pox on both their houses, but it would be good if these numbers hold.

Lefty-loons-a-leaping

Peter Foster: Naomi Klein’s Great Leap Backwards
The “Leap Manifesto issued on Tuesday by an asylum full of celebrity victims of Harper Derangement Syndrome – led by Naomi Klein and David Suzuki – is certainly a thought-provoking platform. The main thoughts it provokes are: Does achieving celebrity cause a sharp drop in IQ and increase in hypocrisy, or does all-consuming artistic ego and/or power-hungry socialist inclination prevent all logical thought?...

... You’d think that somebody among the Deep Thinkers might have reflected that “leaping” doesn’t have the best of historical connotations. Specifically, it conjures up Chairman Mao’s Great Leap Forward, a lurch to socialized modernization that led to tens of millions of deaths.
... Klein is a great promoter of the notion that the dark forces of capitalism deliberately manufacture “crises” as an excuse for dictatorial control. She is quite impervious to any suggestion that the “climate crisis” might come into the same category.
...The manifesto’s main points were also promoted in a piece in the Globe and Mail on Tuesday by Klein, Suzuki, and three other well known policy experts, Leonard Cohen, Donald Sutherland and Ellen Page.
... The majority of the manifesto is taken up with peddling the fantasy of a total switch to alternative energy within a couple of decades, and demanding an end to fossil fuel activity. ... “We call,” note the Gang of Five, “for town hall meetings across the country where residents can gather to democratically define what a genuine leap to the next economy means in their communities.”
... The manifesto confirms that one of the things going for Stephen Harper in this election is his enemies.
If these leaping freaks ever got their way we'd soon find ourselves in a totalitarian nightmare forced to  quote from Chairperson Naomi's Little Green Book. Their rabid nonsense also has hints of the French Revolution and its Reign of Terror.

Of migrants, climate and HDS

Lawrence Solomon: Obama's migrants
Soon after being sworn in as President of the United States in 2009, Barack Obama made the historic speech in Cairo that would launch the Arab Spring the following year. Within weeks of the start of the protests, Egyptian President Mubarak was overthrown with Obama’s encouragement, leading to the takeover by the Muslim Brotherhood ...
Obama's foreign policy has been an unmitigated disaster on many fronts, the M.E. refugee situation being the biggest example of the consequences so far.  He has telegraphed nothing but weakness to the world and the world's worst actors have taken note:  Russia (the Ukraine), Iran (the Godawful nuke deal, for one), China (wait for it!), ...  Too bad (for the world) that he still has over a year left as POTUS.  But when he's gone, any of the 17 Republican candidates will be a vast improvement.

Peter Foster: Climate policy refugees

The rocky road to the federal election is running parallel to the even rockier road to the (latest) “last chance to save the world” UN climate conference in Paris. In fact, their paths are not so much running parallel as frequently colliding. Both are littered with refugees, in one case real, in the other phantasmagorical.

Profound Climate Concern – which tends to overlap with Harper Derangement Syndrome — has become a key factor in Canadian politics. It lies at the bottom of rabid opposition to further development of the oil sands and pipelines, the proliferation of subsidies for unreliable wind and solar energy, and a hotchpotch of plans to curb emissions via regulation, taxes or trading systems. All mean lost jobs and reduced GDP. Only Stephen Harper has dared to point this out, and has been roundly abused for doing so. ...

Refugee rescue frenzy fails to grip Obama's America

Breaking news from the NYT:

This would be like Stephen Harper pledging to take 1000 refugees.

How would that go down with our media?

As contrasted with the Canadian refugee frenzy, Americans are not going nuts trying to outdo each other on taking in Syrian refugees.  Here's another example with Dana Loesch and Megyn Kelly:

Dealing with Harper Derangement Syndrome

... Just what it is about the Conservative Leader that sends reasonable people into such fits of hysteria is best examined by historians, or better yet, psychiatrists. But it surely can’t be evidence, for Mr. Harper’s political style is not particularly novel ...
For starters, that they're "reasonable people" may be a bad assumption.

Syria/Iraq refugee crisis vaulted to the top as an election issue

I just returned from a Conservative campaign event held Surrey, BC early this morning.  The event was cut short with PM Harper addressing only one issue which had been forced to the fore by breaking news of the drowning of a Kurdish refugee family (mother and two young boys) attempting to get out of Turkey.  It was big, big news because the family was attempting to get to Canada.

The PM's speech covered the situation and laid out the government's three pronged approach: help refugees over there, bring refugees here and military action to stop those responsible for forcing people from their home, mainly ISIS.

The Media Party was there of course and the PM took questions from 4 or 5 reporters.  Every single one, starting with Paul Wells, asked the same sanctimonious, one-note, bleeding heart question: Why isn't Canada accepting more refugees, faster, ... ?  The PM gave them all the same answer which was a repeat of his speech.

They all sounded like they were carrying water for Mulcair or Trudeau.  Not one original question came up,  like, for example: "Why isn't Canada stepping up military action to stop ISIS and stem the refugee crisis?"

We're in a "tecnical recession". So, what is a "technical" recession?

Who knows?  It's a meaningless term:
We still don’t know whether Canada is in a recession. After a steady drumbeat of claims that Canada had fallen into a “technical” recession in the first half of 2015, second-quarter GDP dipped 0.1 per cent, although it grew 0.5 per cent in June. Given the country’s steady job growth, there isn’t much more clarity about a possible recession today than there was before the six-month economic data were released on Tuesday.

...all the emphasis on the idea that Canada was in a “technical” recession — as opposed to some other, non-technical type. The term is meaningless; all recessions are technical  ...

... When people call it a technical recession, it’s a signal that they have either a political agenda or they lack expertise ...
It's worth noting that Philip Cross, the author of the above linked column, was the Stats Can guy who wrote the book on defining these things.

Of course none of this makes any difference whatever, politically, for those with an agenda.  And, in election season who could possibly have a political agenda?  They'll use it to their advantage by exaggerating, obfuscating or lying. And most won't know the difference.

BC school curriculum - an overdose of aboriginal culture

Alongside the article on the "massive shift" in BC school curriculum (previous post) is a related article - Aboriginal perspectives help shape new B.C. school curriculum:
With the new curriculum comes one notable and significant shift ...

Not only will students in B.C. be learning about the history of residential schools, starting in Grade 5, but they will also have aboriginal perspectives embedded into all parts of the curriculum in what the government hopes will be a meaningful and authentic manner.
In the specific lessons about B.C.’s history, topics will include discrimination, inequality, oppression and the impacts of colonialism. The changes are part of the B.C. government’s response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s report on the residential school system. [That was fast! Wasn't that report just published?]
Wonderful! A school system that wasted so much time, money and energy on the highly dubious notion that "self esteem" was a paramount consideration in educating students has now shifted in the opposite direction.  Now it is of paramount importance that students (at least the non-aboriginal ones) be indoctrinated with the equally dubious notion that they should feel guilty for their ancestors' supposed sins.  Perhaps for "progressives" that's progress.

I don't know how many aboriginal children attend BC public schools but those who do will be subjected to this curriculum.  What effect will such an unremittingly negative indoctrination on the "history of residential schools" have on their young, immature minds? Will it not reinforce a sense of victimhood?  Will it not make them feel bitter?  How will it affect their relationships with their fellow non-aboriginal students?

Then, how about the children of immigrants who had no role whatsoever in residential schools?  What will this indoctrination do to them?

Indoctrination (not "education") that induces feelings of guilt, victimhood, bitterness and God knows what other negative effects seems not just a little misguided.  This curriculum needs some serious re-thinking.

As for "having aboriginal perspectives embedded into all parts of the curriculum" -  why, other than to demonstrate "sensitivity" and, perhaps, boost aboriginal self-esteem?  Given the limited time available for more valuable learning, it is a massively unproductive exercise to subject everyone to an overdose of aboriginal culture. This stuff should be strictly optional for anyone who might have a "passion" for it.

First Nations Mathematics
Also discussed in the article is how the mathematics curriculum might embed learning about First Nations:
"... difficult to imagine how math ...  could have learning about First Nations embedded into its curriculum  ... building a canoe is a good example of how to think about it. ... Math ability has always been important for First Peoples.   ...There are some fantastic resources out of Haida Gwaii that show how math was embedded in the creation of a canoe ...
Well, "math" in this sense has no doubt been important for all human beings at all stages of development.  It's not difficult to imagine that all humans, even at their most primitive stage, were capable of thinking logically about how to measure and compare quantities for various purposes.  How societies  throughout history actually thought about and used these capabilities would be part of the disciplines of "Cultural Anthropology" and  perhaps "History of Mathematics".

So the rather esoteric "Haida mathematics" of building a canoe should not be embedded in the "Mathematics" curriculum.  It would be a possibly interesting but probably confusing distraction that interferes with learning the modern mathematics necessary to survive and get ahead in the modern world. And suggesting that it is comparable with or relevant to the study of modern mathematical concepts is delusional.

While "First Nations mathematics" may be of great interest, even importance,  to aboriginals (for self esteem?) or historians or anthropologists, for everyone else it should be strictly optional.
