Dion's new Green Shift

From my little local newspaper, Peace Arch News, an excellent editorial by Tom Fletcher:

Foreign Affairs Minister Stéphane Dion served as environment minister under ... Paul Martin. Then, as Liberal leader, Dion’s proposed “green shift” carbon tax was pivotal only in ending his leadership. With a majority government this time, he promises the entire federal cabinet will be involved.

Dion gave a revealing interview to The Globe and Mail last week about his experience in government.

“The old system was to give the file of the environment to the minister of the environment and say, ‘deal with it, be the hero of the environment groups, but don’t bother us because we have jobs to create and an economy to grow’,” Dion said. “That will not work.”

It certainly didn’t work, which is not surprising since Dion is admitting the Liberals considered the environment ministry a mere public relations tool. This was the period when Canada signed on to the Kyoto Protocol, then pretended to care about it as the United States rejected it in a unanimous vote of Congress.

... Dion’s ill-fated “green shift” wasn’t just about greenhouse gases. He intended to impose a national carbon tax and use the proceeds to eliminate child poverty.

Globe and Mail - Stenographers for al Qaeda

The Globe and Mail decries that it is being denied the opportunity to interview jailed al Qaeda killer Omar Khadr:

as a result of the vagaries of Correctional Service Canada interior design, Omar Khadr cannot be interviewed by journalists.

The Globe refers to Khadr as a `... member of the notorious jihadi Khadr family` but almost certainly not because they actually hold that view.

Globe editorial - Parliament must reject Harper’s secret policeman bill:

 "Prime Minister Stephen Harper never tires of telling Canadians that we are at war with the Islamic State."
News flash, we ARE at war with the Islamic State.  The Islamic State has declared war on Canada.  Our CF-18's are bombing them.  Our special forces are on the ground designating targets and shooting back at ISIS fighters in self defence.

"... recklessly conflates the two recent lone-wolf incidents in Canada with the Islamic State’s call for attacks on “non-believing countries.”  ... no evidence that either attacker was connected to ISIS. ..."
Wrong.  Police and CSIS investigators have shown that both Jihadi terrorists were inspired by ISIS videos and propaganda.

"If the Prime Minister has evidence that either attack was directly linked to ISIS, he should provide it ..."
No! With our own eyes and ears we've seen and heard what atrocities ISIS has committed and is threatening to commit.  If the Globe has any evidence that ISIS is NOT a threat, then IT should provide it.

Whoever wrote this piece of nonsense is doing so either from Neville Chamberlain's naive head-in-the-sand playbook or as anti-Harper political propaganda. Or both.

Globe and Mail columnist craps all over GOC ad defending Canadian oil industry

Globe and Mail columnist Eric Reguly writes:

The ad in The New Yorker is pretty, if not quite arresting. The full-page photo on the inside back cover – prime real estate in the United States’ leading upmarket magazine... It is designed to convince influential Americans that the Keystone XL pipeline is environmentally safe, even desirable [the Horror!].

... What is clever about the ad is ... the headline and the succinct lines of copy beneath it. They are slick pieces of propaganda – misleading without being outright lies. Of course, advertising is all about propaganda. But this ad is unconscionable because you, the Canadian taxpayer, paid for it. 

... The second point is that there is nothing “environmentally responsible” about building new pipelines that would allow a huge expansion of the Alberta oil sands. More pipelines, more oil, more greenhouse gases.

With Canadians like Reguly, who needs enemies?  In fact, such ridiculous whinging over a pro-Canadian-oil-industry ad puts Reguly in league with the eco-extremist enemies of Canadian oil-sands and pipelines.

Also, compared with the outright fabrications, funded in the many millions, by the scare-mongering enemies of Canadian oil sands and pipelines (eg. billionaire Obama-booster Tom Steyer) the $207,000 Canadian government ad is the epitome of forthrightness, honesty and frugality.

And, observations by Reguly such as these:

"... Canada’s Kyoto accord commitment. Canada bailed out of the accord in 2011, the only signatory country to do so.

... While the 17-per-cent target is intact, the chances of it being achieved are close to zero; even Environment Canada admits so.  ... because oil sands production is soaring. ..."

... are positives, not the negatives he implies.  Good for the government of Canada!
